Why Every Yogi Should do a Yoga Teacher Training

Knowing nothing about you, I am hardly eager to give you advice. With that said, if there is one service I feel I could do for you, one gift I could share, it would be to inspire you to do a yoga teacher training.

Why?

I have done many things in life. I’ve co-founded multiple successful technology businesses. I’ve been homeless in Maui.  I’ve watched the sunrise on mountain peaks in Southeast Asia. I watched hawks circle the Taj Mahal. I’ve prayed with the Dalai Lama in his home. I’ve had many out of body experiences. I’ve been in love many times. Of all these experiences, none of them has amounted to the depth and meaning of the yoga teacher training.

Before I did the training, I walked in life with a nagging sense of dissatisfaction in everything I did. It didn’t matter if I was making great money, traveling the world, or connecting deeply with friends. It felt like there was always something more to life, no matter what I did. I thought this was something I would live with forever.

I can honestly say the yoga teacher training revealed to me what that feeling was, fixed it, and gave me the tools to continue to come back whenever I feel that dissatisfaction again. Sitting here now, it still feels like a miracle to me that it exists, and that I am able to apply its teachings every day. I feel incredibly grateful to have found something that actually answers many of life’s deepest, most pressing questions.

“Yoga teacher training” is perhaps not the best term for it, as most who do it don’t really intend to teach. It’s really more for deepening your practice and revealing the whole-life system of yoga, which is where the benefits really lie.

The yoga teacher training is so meaningful for a few reasons. Mainly:

1. It gives you extremely practical tools to combat whatever you are feeling

Modern life is difficult and it changes a lot. As does your health, your emotions, and your spiritual connection. The tools you learn in yoga teacher training help you identify what’s going on, and give you specific, practical tools to bring yourself back into balance regardless of what you’re going through.

It reveals to you that life is not the huge drama with you as the victim, and shows you what you are experiencing is simply energies moving through your body that can be (usually pretty quickly) shifted.

I can honestly say that still years later, I rarely feel confused about my feelings in my body and my health. Yoga is a very precise system for understanding them. I almost always have the tools to bring myself back into a state of connection and balance regardless of what type of stress is going on around me. This has taken significant dedication, of course, but it’s accessible to anyone.

2. It brings you into a worldwide community of some of the most amazing people in the world

The community of people who have gone through yoga teacher training is a vibrant, worldwide community of inspiring, grounded, and purpose-driven people. Being a part of this community has been one of the great fits of my life. Anywhere I go in the world, I know exactly where to find this community, and can instantly make soul-friends.

Every time I meet someone who has been through yoga teacher training, I know it is a person I can connect with and share myself on the deepest level. It’s very different and much more beautiful than any other friend-connection that I’ve known. It’s the feeling of being around a person who you know has a similar life purpose to yours.

3. It gives you a deep sense of purpose that is with you always

I remember constantly feeling disconnected from a sense of purpose in life, and even when I found it, it would be temporary and fleeting.

Regardless of whether you want to teach as a profession, the teacher trainings teach you to bear the torch of these practices that have existed for thousands and thousands of years. While that may sound like a big responsibility, if not you, then who else? The teacher training empowers you to realize that you are the teachings in living form and that you have as much potential to become a yoga master as anyone who has ever lived.

No matter what I am doing, I feel a sense of purpose in bringing the spirit of yoga into everything I do. It’s made my purpose more about something that is present moment to moment, as opposed to something I want to achieve.

With this, I feel I have something very urgent to say to you and feel I should say it as urgently as if I were standing in the room with you. Please join us for a teacher training in Bali.
