The modern world does anything in the name of Yoga to cash in on, whilst only a few attempt to convey the message of this ancient tradition with purpose and profundity.

Some of the centers offering teacher training in Rishikesh -the city of superabundance in yoga schools-  are compromised in some areas if not in all. Aware of this current situation, we have listed the ones we believe are delivering the tradition with depth, integrity, and comfort.

Sattva Yoga – Pure Tantric Roots

The family atmosphere built throughout the years inspires sattva veterans to keep coming back over and over again, and that can create a feeling of non-belonging to the newly arrived. The ones who make it through this ego-trap will be able to join a beautiful and friendly community.

Anand Mehrotra -founder and director of the ashram- was born and raised in the Himalayas, and founded Sattva with the mission of rendering the ancient teachings to the younger generation and those seeking spiritual insight.

The school commits to take students from 0 to a master level if continuing the education at Sattva, which doesn’t culminate with the regular 500 hours. Sattva has designed a Master Teacher training, where experienced teachers can improve and adopt new skills and methodology.

The Sattva lodging is rather uncommon in Rishikesh. The facilities feature spacious cottages with large windows flaunting gorgeous views of the Himalayan foothills and the headwaters of the Ganga river. The rooms are furnished with the required with a rustic Indian touch.

Three organic and vegetarian meals are provided daily, with some of the ingredients grown on the school’s farm itself. Sangha Cafe also serves green juices, smoothies, tea, and coffee.

Food: Healthy, organic
Accommodation: Spacious, comfortable
Teachings: Tantra Yoga
Perfect for: 200, 300, 500 Hours

Anand Prakash Ashram – The full yogic experience

Akhanda Yoga’s trainings are a full-residential experience designed by Master Yogrishi Vishvketu (PhD). The ashram schedule consists of early morning chanting and prayers, meditation, agni poojas (fire ceremony), and yoga asana practice. Routines that after living for more than 21 days in the ashram, will become part of who you are.

The trainings are conducted in one of the two large yoga halls, the rooftop or the elegant marble ceremony terrace. The first yoga shala was built with natural elements such as bamboo and wooden, creating a natural environment that merges with the wilderness of the mountain.

The chambers are simple, clean and comfortable. Living the ashram life implies minimalism, mindfulness, and ethics that include a dress code (shoulders and belly covered, avoiding shorts and tight pants).

Food is cooked in consonance with Ayurveda and Vedic tradition, avoiding garlic and onion. Nevertheless, the flavor comes together and will satisfy anyone’s expectations. Vegan, gluten-free or other special dietary options are available.

Abhayaranya – Yoga Village

Abhayaranya is the result of years and years of improving the most famous school in Rishikesh: Rishikesh Yog Peeth. Roshan Singh started the teacher trainings in a humble building in Ram Jhula and pretty much a couple of years later there were few affiliated yoga schools and buildings under his care. After many years offering all levels of teacher training every month -back to back- the school moved up to the mountains.

The village was constructed with the only purpose to hold retreats and teacher trainings in a peaceful atmosphere away from the rushing roads of India (they even had to build a road to reach by car).

The wooden bungalows are a dream, with a big bed, a cute bathroom, and all the space and essentials needed to relax and unwind during your stay in the mountains.

The main teacher is Roshan, but with the volume of inquiries the school has, many more teachers are involved in the many retreats and trainings. Almost all the instructors hold an E-RYT 500 and a lot of experience and dedication. Some of the greatest teachers from India started here and eventually moved to Bali, USA, and Europe.

The food is mainly traditional Indian recipes, with a modern touch, and a handful of fresh vegetables sourced from the farmers around. Every meal is mostly vegan, besides a little bit of curd or yogurt that can be added occasionally to some dishes.

Food: Simple, traditional
Accommodation: Modern bungalows
Teachings: Hatha, Vinyasa
Perfect for: 200 hours
